Will's 1st Zoo Trip

We live in Houston. I refuse to go to the zoo during the months of April - November. It's just too hot. It's stinky and in general yuck. Plus, the mito disease seems to affect Will and his ability to cool down, so going outside for long periods of time is really not an option.

So this past weekend - note in January - we set a trip to the zoo to coincide with a trip from Neil's brother and his wife Uncle Justin and Aunt Erica. The weather was abnormally warmer than it's been the past few weeks, but we had a great time!

I guess Will was doing some serious camera posing here.

Our friend Rachelle and her son Anthony met up with us. They are Zoo aficionados and helped us get around.

  1. Did you get a chance to do the Diego and Dora 3D movie? I think its really cool. Its only like 9 mins. long. There are even smells and sprays of water and vibrations and stuff. The smells give Michael asthma. hahaha.

We love love love the zoo. We are members there. In the summer, we often just go into the Natural Encounters part (which is an indoor exhibit near to front entrance, the one with the tube you can crawl through the fish tank in it). We'll spend an hour in there and then leave. or another indoor exhibit like the acquarium. Just a thought. I don't know how often you have to go to make the membership worthwhile, but I think its just a few times and it pays for itself? We used to be members at the children's museum but that place is like Chuck E. Cheese to me now (but without the security of the arm stamps). Its SO LOUD and chaotic and the kids are so hard to keep track of. I'm over it. I'd rather go to a place like Wonderwild or the zoo and just keep it short and indoor exhibits if its hot. Vincent's decided he likes the mall now. ugh. He asks for the mall (loves the carousel) and the playground. I thought I had at least a few more years until they became mall rats ;) Will is so cute with those upside down shades. Oh, and Vincent keeps inviting everyone to "come walk with us and will." haha. Perhaps he'll recruit a few team members in his efforts?

  2. We didn't do the movie, but it sounds really neat. We'll have to go back and try it out. We didn't get to see everything since we got a late start.

I would like to go to the Children's Museum but I have this idea in my head that working parents take their kids there when they are home from day care with a fever, but not sick enough to lay on the couch. I just worry about germs too much.

  3. Lori, I think you are sadly right about the Children's Museum. I think its a germ fest. and the tot spot is generally full of moms sitting around yik yakking while their too-old-for-the-tot-spot kid is being rough and annoying with the little ones. I'm a judgemental monster at the children's museum. honestly, I'm thinking its now a place for 9+ age kids, because its so crazy and chaotic. I'm not recommending it by any stretch. That said, I think getting there early is key when you are talking about germs because they are very good about cleaning the toys in the tot spot.
